I live on a small farm in Rogaland, where I tend to my garden following permaculture principles, which suits me perfectly as a herbalist. My garden thrives with plants that most gardens unfortunately lack. I graduated as a herbalist in the fall of 2023. Unfortunately, I have recently been diagnosed with cancer, leiomyosarcoma. This makes life a bit challenging for me these days (March 2024), and I expect to undergo surgery and chemotherapy, with uncertain prospects for the future. I have otherwise been more or less sick for about 19 years, which led me to become a herbalist. I have consulted countless doctors, often hitting a wall and not receiving help or being heard. However, this does not apply to all doctors I have seen, but a significant portion, which surprises me. This drives me to help those struggling with health issues. If I can contribute to someone feeling better, then I have gained a lot from life. Please reach out if you believe I can assist you through my studies in herbal medicine. I have less time now as I undergo cancer treatment, but I hope to become more available over time. Regardless, feel free to contact me if you wish. ... And yes, I am originally from Iceland and have backgrounds in marketing, IT, skincare therapy, viticulture, aquaculture, and most recently regenerative agriculture. I never stop educating myself; it's as important as breathing.

Embracing herbal beauty and personal care routines can transform your daily regimen into a holistic, nourishing experience. Utilizing the natural power of herbs can enhance your hair care, skincare, and bath rituals. Here are some tips and recipes to incorporate these natural wonders into your routine.

Herbal Hair Care

Using herbs like rosemary, nettle, and horsetail can promote healthy hair growth, strengthen your locks, and improve scalp health.

Rosemary:

  • Benefits: Rosemary promotes hair growth, boosts scalp circulation, and helps prevent dandruff.
  • Rosemary Rinse: Boil a handful of fresh rosemary in 2 cups of water. Let it steep for 30 minutes, strain, and cool. Use it as a final rinse after shampooing to stimulate hair growth and add shine.
  • Rosemary Oil Massage: Infuse olive oil with fresh rosemary sprigs. Massage the infused oil into your scalp and leave it on for at least 30 minutes before washing out to nourish your scalp.

Nettle:

  • Benefits: Nettle is rich in vitamins and minerals that strengthen hair, reduce hair loss, and promote a healthy scalp.
  • Nettle Hair Tonic: Steep 2 tablespoons of dried nettle leaves in 2 cups of boiling water for 20 minutes. Strain and use the liquid as a hair tonic, massaging it into your scalp and leaving it in.
  • Nettle Shampoo: Add nettle tea to your regular shampoo for an extra boost of nutrients.

Horsetail:

  • Benefits: Horsetail is high in silica, which strengthens hair and improves its texture.
  • Horsetail Rinse: Prepare a rinse by boiling 1 tablespoon of dried horsetail in 2 cups of water. Let it cool, strain, and use it as a final rinse after washing your hair.
  • Horsetail Oil Treatment: Infuse horsetail in a carrier oil like jojoba or olive oil. Apply the oil to your scalp and hair, leave it on for 30 minutes, then wash out for stronger hair.

Natural Skincare Routines

Creating natural skincare products using herbs can rejuvenate your skin and provide a chemical-free alternative to conventional products.

Herbal Toners:

  • Chamomile and Witch Hazel Toner: Brew a strong chamomile tea and let it cool. Mix equal parts of chamomile tea and witch hazel. Store in a spray bottle and use as a refreshing toner to soothe and calm the skin.

Herbal Serums:

  • Rosehip and Lavender Serum: Mix 1 tablespoon of rosehip oil with 5 drops of lavender essential oil. Apply a few drops to your face after cleansing and toning for a nourishing and healing effect.

Herbal Face Masks:

  • Calendula and Honey Mask: Mix 1 tablespoon of calendula-infused oil with 1 tablespoon of raw honey. Apply to your face and leave on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water for hydrated and glowing skin.
  • Green Tea and Clay Mask: Brew a cup of green tea and let it cool. Mix 2 tablespoons of green tea with 1 tablespoon of bentonite clay to form a paste. Apply to your face, leave on for 15 minutes, and rinse off with warm water to detoxify and refresh your skin.

Herbal Bath Rituals

Creating herbal baths with ingredients like lavender, chamomile, and Epsom salts can turn a simple bath into a luxurious and relaxing experience.

Lavender Bath:

  • Lavender and Epsom Salt Soak: Mix 1 cup of Epsom salts with 10-15 drops of lavender essential oil. Add to your bathwater for a relaxing and muscle-soothing soak.

Chamomile Bath:

  • Chamomile and Oatmeal Bath: Place a handful of dried chamomile flowers and 1 cup of oatmeal in a muslin bag or cheesecloth. Hang it under the faucet as you fill your tub with warm water. This bath soothes irritated skin and relaxes the body.

Herbal Bath Blends:

  • Relaxing Herbal Bath: Combine 1/2 cup of dried lavender, 1/2 cup of dried chamomile, and 1/2 cup of dried rose petals. Place the mixture in a muslin bag or cheesecloth and hang it under the faucet as you fill your tub. This blend will create a fragrant and calming bath experience.
